Brexit Update

First official communication issued by the European Commission and the EUIPO (Intellectual Property Office of the European Union) regarding the implications of Brexit for the owners of Intellectual Property Rights in the European Union.

The official position of the EU authorities is that, unless an agreement is reached within the coming months, EU trademarks and registered Community designs will lose their effects in the territory of the United Kingdom as from the date of Brexit, i.e in March 2019. Currently, the representatives of both parties are striving to agree on a solution of continuity for these rights once Brexit becomes effective. We will keep you duly updated of any new developments in this regard.

As stated in the attached communication, it is important that the affected owners keep this information in mind when assessing their protection strategy
